Inside mirror.

Is there any way, besides drilling holes in the glass, to keep the adhesive on the mirror attached to the windshield? I buy the best stuff, clean the metal puck and glass thoroughly and follow the instructions to the letter and the thing still falls off every year or two. It's always in the summer. I have to park the truck where the sun beats down on the windshield. I did what Paw Paw said the last couple of times and it still falls off. '94 Ranger

Try taking it to a auto glass shop. The glue that they use is a little stronger than the stuff you can buy at a store

Well lets see Alex, which bond line failed, the metal to adhesive, or glass to adhesive ???

Last year it was about 50-50, this time it's about 90% on the glass. Some Permatex Extreme Strength Rearview Mirror Adhesive just came in the mail. I think it's the same stuff I used last year.

Ok so this time most of the adhesive stayed on the Glass & thats the most difficult surface to get a good bond, so sounds like you did good prepping that surface.

Not sure what happened with the metal button bond surface. Any clues on the metal surface like finger prints, cleaning prep drying marks / stains where the bond failed, or on the surface of the adhesive surface that pulled away, air bubbles in the adhesive?
Any signs of shear lines in or on the adhesive surface, that would suggest the metal button moved / floated before the adhesive set?
Lastly, did you perform the bond within the specified temp range 50-70 F & out of direct sunlight & wiped Both surfaces with the Cleaner/Activator, letting it dry, just before making the bond?
Was the single drop of adhesive large enough to spread out & Completely cover the button bond surface, without leaving any unwetted surface or entrapped air bubbles? Some bond failure mode trouble shooting thoughts for consideration.

Permatex says they're the brand used by automakers Ford, GM & Chrysler Permatex® Professional Strength Rearview Mirror Adhesive – Permatex. the single use kit is the same formula, so follow their use suggestions & see how it goes. Permatex® Rearview Mirror Adhesive Kit – Permatex

The tape on the windshield is from last year's installation.

Yup it looks like a bond problem with the metal button, as very little adhesive seems to have bonded to it, so pay special attention to its preparation, keeping it squeaky clean after doing the final wipe with the cleaner / primer, letting it completely dry Before adding the drop of adhesive. From the excess adhesive that worked out on the right side, it seems the drop was plenty big.

Thank Paw Paw. I attached it this morning when the temperature was right. I sanded the puck with 220 grit sandpaper on a piece of glass. I hope I won't have to get back to you next year with the same problem.

If it comes off again, try to score the metal piece with some grooves so that the bonding agent has something besides smooth to hold on to.
