headers vs. muffler

I have just bought a new ranger 3.0 and want to increase power for towing a trailer. Which would give me more power headers or changing to a high flow muffler?

Welcome to FTE rocklayer,

Putting on the Hi-Flo muffler is only doing part of the job!
Headers increase exhaust flow wo/ stock manifold restrictions!
Combine em' both! Also, don't forget your HO2/O2 sensor recepticle holes!

thanks for the info. What do you mean about HO2/O2 sensor recepticle holes?

. Your exhaust system has one oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter and one past it. When you modify your exhaust system, keep this in mind.

Hi rocklayer,

These are the holes that your HO2 (Hot Oxygen sensor) + O2 (Oxygen sensor) go in to, that have to be switched from your old system to the new headers + exhaust! These give the on-board computer needed info about the way the exhaust system is running and then regulates air/fuel flow!

Oh Man. I read the original book. Some seriously seriously spooky stuff.

And I pride myself one being an "avid" outdoorsman and a definite animal person. Scared the crapola out of me anyway.

Okay, my understanding of these things is tenuous at best, but won't headers ultimately decrease low-end torque (and hence towing capacity)? I know putting them on can bump upper-RPM horsepower, but it's been my understanding that too little back pressure--or more accurately, too little pressure differential across the exhaust system--(i.e., like with headers) will sap towing ability. It has to do with "valve overlap" and the possibility of having exit gasses going the wrong way at lower RPMs, which ends up robbing power.

I've got a pretty good text file someone typed up about backpressure and its effect on power; e-mail me if you'd like me to forward it.

so according to that theary of to little back pressure being bad i quess i should maybe just try the muffler swap and see what happens.

Hi soksniffer,
Interesting fact!
See...another lesson learned!
I knew that backpressure had to be part of the exhaust system equation, but did'nt know where!

That's what I would try. Headers for Rangers (for my Ranger anyway) are really expensive anyway, and most start to crack and need to be replaced after just a few years.

Noobies... First you should start your own topic instead of replying to a topic with an OFF TOPIc question.

But to answer your question.
Take the top off the airbox.
take out airfilter
squirt wd-40 on the dowels in the bottom of the airbox
pull airbox out
yank the snorkel off the front and the other piece too thats in front of it.

Put everything back the way you found it minus the snorkel .
