here is what i have... 91 silver ann. / 302/ e40d/ automatic/ all stock/ 110k ..... two weeks ago been out shopping with the wife all day. driving through a parking lot came to a stop and lost forward gears. was able to downshift to first gear and get the truck rolling limped it all the way home (15 miles) and parked it. checked it a couple of hours later after my cooling off period and could put it in drive and the engine would rev up but the wheels would barely turn. reverse would work and 4x would engage. but still no forward momentum. let it sit for almost two weeks and found a complete e40d in a salvage yard. decided to pull the old tranny and do the work myself. ( money's tight and times are hard.) got in the truck cranked it and it went into gear with no problem and drove like nothing ever happened. it could be the fact she didn't like my wife being in the truck all day, i don't know. but i am to scared to take it to far from home. any thoughts?????? can a converter get hot and cause this reaction???
**** sorry to be so long winded tried to get all the facts in there.
have you checked the plug to the manuel lever position sensor? why dont you take the sensor off of the junkyard trans and install it on the original trans and see if that has any effect.just always keep in mind that it is usually the simple things that fool us into thinking it is serious. the MLPS tells the computer what gear you are in and when to shift. it also is your neutrol safety switch and reverse light switch. someone posted that you could get one at napa for i think around 60.00$. said to ask for a neutral safty switch for an e4od. i dont know for sure. but for 60$ it may be worth a try.
spoke to a shade tree today and he said that a valve inside of the tranny could have stuck open and once the tranny cooled off it could have released. is this visible? went out today and purchased filter and fluid (mirc 5) also purchased a flush(trans x). it said to put it in and drive 100 miles thenchange all the fluid. i bought 20 qts of fluid because the shadetree said it would take that much is that possible?
The E4OD takes at least that much fluid. It's a big unit.
The correct way to flush the transmission fluid is to disconnect the lines at the cooler in front of the motor and pump fluid through it with the engine running until all the old fluid is out.
