fuel pump problem

I just bought a 91 f-250 and when i picked it up it ran ok , then the alt went had it replaced and now there is no power to the fuel pumps. So i by passed the frt one in the fuse panel so it would run and then the dist went out. replaced it, every thing is ok but i still cant get power to the frt or rear pump unless i by pass the fuse panel by using a jumper wire in the fuse box. also when it is on the frt tank it wont read how much is in the tank but if i switch it to the rear it reads the tank but doest have power to it. this is the first of many questions since i just bought this truck

Have you checked the fuel pump relay?

When you first turn the key on you should hear your realy click and your fuel pump load up. The fuel pump relay is rather cheep and easy to repalce. Start there. Good luck

Ok before you take out the pumps (1 in each tank), make sure that the conections are not broken. Also try to "reset" the fuel pump inertia switch ( by the E-Brake) I hate to say it but it sounds like it may well be your fuel pumps. : ( . You may try fliping the fuel selector switch back and forth see if that helps. One last thing and please do not be offended .... make sure you have gas in the tanks

the rear leaks like a siv, but when i test the wires to the rear before it even gets to the pump i have no power but i have power at the realy.. do u think there might be a short in the wire to the pump and one more thing, the frt tank which is the one working wont read the amount of fuel in the tank, but the rear which isnt working reads fine..

Yes it may be a short, you will have to trace , time consuming but not to hard. Were is your pump leaking from? As far as the front tank not reading , a commen problem is a bad float, or a bad fuel selector switch ( did you try fliping it between tanks ? Flip the seclector switch back and forth quickley about 5-10 times and see if it helps ) Changing the pumps is a bit easier if you loosen your bed and go at it from the top, no droping of the tanks. have yo checked the wires on the fuel selector (not the switch) it self?

How'd you get to the radio from the fuel pumps? Need something to listen to while working? Sounds like you blew your fuses or links. Better start there. Your pump problem sounds like selector switch. Have you looked at that yet?

Clinton Twp ,huh? Small world. I grew up in Sterling Heights.
