I was just a kid when I helped build the original ark but I remember a cubit was the distance from the end of the fingers to the back of a bent elbow, about 18 inches the way you young'ns measure.The arm was always handy for measuring.

 

If I measure a cubit that way then a cubit for me is 23 inches long.
