A/c problem

Hi Guys,

I've has this problem come up recently. While I'm driving my ac will get warm and then cold, warm again. Any idea what would cause this?

Thanks
Butch

Probably low on R134 or R12 depending on the year/make/model of vehicle. Your profile says 1995 Econoline and you've posted in "Ranger & B-Series" so I can't tell. Either way, sounds like the same problem regardless.

Thanks! I forgot to say that I have a 96 Ranger. I'll check the R134. I had it serviced in the spring

When it gets "warm", check to see if the defroster vents are blowing cold air. This would indicate a failed plastic vacuum check valve. Does not happen often, but is the cheapest problem fix.

check valve or crack somewhere in the lines. at more wide open throttle the vacuum drops and the AC goes to default which is blowing defrost on the windshield and not out the vents. But this is only one possibility because the way you described it doesnt really give enough info to diagnose fully

Check the air gap on your compressor clutch!! There are videos online on how to do it, you'll need a set of old school feeler gages.....

Everyone seems to grab for the refrigerant when they have a problem with system blowing warm air.....

Thanks guys, It turned out to be low engine coolant. The thermometer eventually stuck and the truck was running hot. I changed the thermostat and added coolant and it's blowing cold again, I do still have the original problem that I didn't mention. The ac will be working fine then it will randomly lose volume on the airflow. The temp seems to drop a little however it is still blowing cool air. The airflow can get down to practically nothing. If I shut truck off for a short time, about 10 minutes or so and start it again, it's blowing hard and cold again, I thought this might be a blend door issue but when I shut it off and turn back on I don't have to touch any controls and the cold ac comes back. I checked to see if the air was coming from the defroster but it's not. I checked the floor vents and they seem normal. From the sound of it the blower isn't slowing down either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
