Thanks again for all the replies. I have found a couple of cheaper 400's and ill probably give them a shot just due to cost. For what Im getting either one for, Ill likely look into a cam, timing set, intake, carb and headers and see how it does.

Just a quick reply to the diesel stuff. Ive had lots of gas trucks and lots of diesels over the years, and the only place where I have found the diesel to fall a little short, is winter starting, and the oil change (IF using synthetic all year around) are a little more expensive. For my vehicle uses, and how much I drive, a diesel is superior in every other way, fuel economy, power, reliability, you name it. IF I had the time on my hands I would go with a diesel swap for sure, just no darn time.

3-4 times what it's worth? Since a 325 HP 400 could be built for the same cost as a 374 HP 460, I'm really not sure why someone would say it isn't money well spent on the smaller and lighter engine. At a certain point it does make sense to go with the larger 385 series engine, but in my opinion that is well beyond 400HP.

So what's the WORST part about the 400? People will always talk trash because "It ain't a 460!" LOL!

if I were going to go to the trouble to swap in a 460 - it would have to be a 500+ HP engine.
The 400 has the same oiling system as the 351C but this not an issue in the 400 as it just won't spin the RPM of the Cleveland. The Clevelands oiling system really only needs upgraded for endurance racing. If it is going to be used in a raced street application then the Moroso 2205 restrictor plugs are adequate. For 99.9% of 400 builds the oiling system does not need touched and any issues can be overcome with a high volume oil pump.

I found this while reading another thread. It may shed some light for some people: Technical Atricles

The myths about the 351m & the 400 are interesting reading.
