Been gone for quite a while. Had to put off the truck because so many other things like moving into a dilapidated house and stuff like that (we moved from Arizona to Arkansas). But I am in the process of pulling my 1996 7.3 zf5. I have the turbo off, radiator out, fan and clutch out. Can this engine be pulled without moving the trans or does it need to come out? Can I do this without removing the front clip? I have so much invested that I really dont care and right now I have the time. I have removed the trans already once to put in a rebuilt zf5 and a new clutch. But if I have to remove it again I will. So much on this truck is new that I cant even start to list the parts. So its getting done now. Thank you for your input.

 

Just leave the transmission in the truck it will be much easier removing and installing the engine.

 

That will be much easier anyway. So just unbolt the trans and then stab it back into the engine when it goes back? I am removing everything from the top of the engine right now. It all has to come off anyway to be power-washed because the engine is covered in filth. I'm replacing the wiring harness also. I was going to wait for a total rebuild but its been sitting for years and the old one is oil soaked so just going to use it.

 

Yes, no need to remove anything else other than the radiator, there's plenty of space to take out the engine, and you already took out the turbo which is a must of you don't want to damage the fire wall upon removal.

 

Sorry Adam. Zf issues...you will have to at least get the zf back some or remove most of the way. The oil pan won't clear because of the input shaft vs clutch...

 

Missed the zf part, can't the trans be jacked up some for room?

 

Kinda what I thought. I got everything off today. had to remove the irate efuel lines so I could get the lifting eyes back on. I guess tomorrow will be spent removing the transfer case and trans and all the supports.

 

Got the transfer case out today. Spent most of the day with the wife did not matter anyway I seemed to have lost my super long extension so I couldn't mess with the transmission even if I wanted to. Getting close. Really all tha'ts left is getting the zf5 out of the way and some power steering lines then it will be time to give it a try and see if I can get it out.

 

Lost my 3/8 x18 in extension. Ended up using 1/2 breaker bar with 2 1/2x6 extensions and a 1/2x 3/8 adapter with 2 3/8x6 inch extensions and swivel for the socket on the top right bolt near down pipe. Rest wrench head on fame and pull back sitting under passenger door area.

Other bell housing bolts were easier to get at once cross member was removed and trans tipped down.

 

The old lady picked up a new set yesterday on her way to work from the Harbor Freight. I have to get the engine out, and then make a parts list.I have the Strictly Diesel oil pan fix and am debating on removing that and putting in the weldable one but that went up to like $115. All new orings and gaskets... Again. Ford sealant, and debating on lpop and water pump. We are trying to keep this as cheap as possible but still do it as right as we can.

 

that dipstick is a fun one to decide on, im going with reseal with some TA for now.

The whole problem is a oil leak between the front cover and the block right under the hpop. where there is no gasket just sealant. So the front cover needs to come off. Im also debating on helicoiling the two front cover hpop bolt holes. It took a long time and 10 or so hpop re-installs to determine where the leak was coming from. Finally was able to set up a phone camera to watch when the truck was running.

 

Just called Riffraff for opinions on the Ford RTV vs the International RTV for the oil pan and they recommended the Moroso oil pan gasket. Does anyone have any experience with that thing?

Trans is out but still under the truck. First time I took it out I didn't care because I was getting a new one and basically dropped it off the trans jack to the ground and dragged it out. This time I would like to pull it out on the stand and not risk dropping and cracking something. I was also 2 years younger and stronger. Im trying to figure out a way to jack the truck up far enough to roll it out but it needs to go up almost another foot and I dont feel super comfortable jacking the truck up a foot higher than it already is. I'm braining.
