2003 E350 van reliability?

I'm looking at a 2003 E350 conversion van with the 5.4L motor at 104,000 miles, are there issues with this year van?
Does this van come with the heavy duty E40D transmission and 2 valve 5.4L motor? Also, is it more difficult to replace the plugs on a van vs F150 with the 5.4?

All the F series truck guys say the rear two plugs are mighty difficult. Quite the opposite on a van once you remove the doghouse. Easy peasy.

All vans have the 2 valve version.

I dont know about the transmission.

These Vans are known for:
ball joints every 100,000
radius arm bushings
catalytic converters about 150,000
exhaust manifold studs rusting and breaking
brakes are weak but upgrades are cheap and excellent
Tire wear on outer edges no matter what (just rotate often)
door latch cables fail

the best news is that all this stuff is basically 100% predictable.

I have put 225,000 miles on my 2000 E150 with the 4.6L engine. I have not had any of the problems mentioned by Im50fast, except for the door latch cables. Just before 200,000 miles the ignition coils started going. I had them all replaced.

the E150s have crappy, tiny brakes that wear out every 20-25,000 miles. Your E350 has much better brakes.

you must be one very lucky guy. I’ve been on this forum for 5-6 years and the consensus agrees with my list.
Maybe you’re lucky on a few things but there’s no way your ball joints have lasted 225,000 miles. You should get them checked out.

Contrary to EmilBarnabis; I have a 325,000 mile van that I was chasing a misfire recently and ended up replacing all the coils and it made no difference.
So I understand that experiences can differ.

but the list I made is definitely accurate.

Thank you the responses. sounds like the ball joint issue is similar to my 1997 F150.

From that list I have only experienced broken exhaust manifold studs and cat converter issues... it's beginning to come apart and rattle. No unusual tire wear and I'd say the brakes are excellent compared to my previous truck. I also have some loose steering linkages now but these are normal wear items.

At only 104,000 miles ….. it's just now getting broken in …. LOL
