1999 4.2 tach wiring

I have an autometer autogauge 2300 and an autometer 9117 tach adapter that I bought awhile ago for my '99 f150 xl 4.2. The instructions are pretty unclear, so I'm just trying to figure it out. From what it says, I think I can either wire the adapter into a 42 pin connector, or splice directly into the wires around the coil pack (but I have no idea). And then I still have to wire the tach itself to 12v dash lighting and a switched 12v source on the fuse box (neither of which I can find), along with the ground and wire to the adapter obviously. Any help is appreciated
