Morning , Alan there have been a lot of people hurt when the bead resets from the intense heat and the tire explodes . Even with the valve core out . So stick a ax handle in it so it cant reset .

Let me clarify. There is a 1" pipe that's plugged on the back side of my wheels to deflate them. There is NO WAY air will expand fast enough to seat the bead, let alone blow the tire off. I've done this before with no issues. The trick is not to do all the welding at once. Lay 3 or 4" inches, then hit another area, then another wheel, then another wheel, etc. By the time you get back to the first one, it's cool again.

Well, the yard is cleared out. I got a pleasant surprise when I got to the scrap yard. It's up to $140 / ton. I actually made a little money today! I earned it, though. It took FOUR HOURS to drag the truck up on to the trailer. No wheels and tires and no rear axle at all makes it challenging. I can't complain. I had $400 in to the truck and made almost $1,100 off of it.

No I have to go clean the yard up where it was sitting and get some other stuff over to the burn pile. I guess this is early spring cleaning.

Dave, I'm having problems with tire shops now.

I found a place that has what I'm looking for and what I'm willing to pay. The guy ask when would I like to make an appointment. I say this Saturday 12:30-1:00. He tells me they don't do installs on Saturdays, and could I come in Friday at 1:00.

I tell him I work Monday -Friday, and can't take off work to get tires mounted so it has to be a Saturday. He then says we only do sales on Saturday, and don't have mechanics available. WTF?

Apparently selling tires is more important than actually installing them. One of two things pop into mind. Is the shop so cheap they don't want to pay someone who may spend most of the day twiddling their thumbs OR are they such a terrible place to work they can't keep enough people?

I hate to say it, but you might be better off walking away from them.

I walked away when he said they only do sales on Saturday. It been nice if their website said they didn't do installs on Saturday.

I'd buy tires on line, but I can't fit four tires and my new wheels in my car. It's one or the other.

Just mount the tires yourself. Use two pry bars like you did when you were a kid and had to do a tube in your bicycle. Same principle, just bigger. Then you just have to take them to get balanced. I mount and dismount tires all the time by hand. It's a pain, but it's doesn't take that long and isn't too terribly difficult.

If I were to try that it would take a week to do the first tire. The last three would be done pretty quickly.
I had never none too much auto work until I got my 55. Then I went all in and blew it completely apart. I remember working with the brakes. It took me forever to get the shoes on the first time or two. Then after that I could do it very easily. Practice makes a huge difference.

good morning missouri.. i am up a bit early this morning trying to get in a extra round of exercises ... i think alan has a handle on welding on his wheel.. but still be careful alan!!!. one of the worse nips i got while working was a bead popping on a (new at the time) tubeless tire and my dumb butt had my thumb in the wrong place..... tube type tires like i was used to usually came onto the bead much slower

RC 2:30 AM!!!! I would say that's early. I bet some guys here would say you just stayed up late.
We had a guy in town that owned a tire shop. A few years ago, he was installing a new tire and it blew. The rim hit him in the face and hit the ceiling hard. He almost died, lost an eye and now looks like a totally different person. I don't think he is able to work anymore. I don't recall the outcome of the investigation though. It was a newer rim. So, always be careful.

Back from the doc's. He said my toe is taking it's sweet time to heal, but the metatarsal is looking better. He said I can try to wear work boots if I want, but something with a lot of support and a hard sole. He seemed to be more optimistic than I am over the x-rays. The bones didn't look much different to me than they did 3 weeks ago. I'm gonna keep the boot on today and maybe wear my Army boots tomorrow to see how it feels.

A oldy but a goody.

C130 rolling down the strip. Long haired aviator on a TDY trip, stand up, hook up, shuffle to the bar, drunk as hell, ya wreck the renta car.
