What Is the Deal With These Used Trucks?

Ive been looking for a nice used truck for my sons first vehicle. The high school parking lot has a row of $25-30k diesel trucks that I can't figure out how these parents afford for their kids.
After looking for eternity, I switched to F150's, hoping that would help. NOT! Doesn't anyone take care of their vehicles anymore? I'm so fed up with looking for a truck around 100k miles, and if I do find one, it's $25,000, and it looks like it's 30 years old inside.
i know a $5k truck is basically yesterday's $500 jalopy, but I can't get my head around spending $15,000 for a 15 year old F150, with rusted out cab corners and rockers full of holes. I'm about ready to lease a truck for my son.
What are you all doing? Just looking for advice.
Thanks ahead of time.

That's why I'm still driving the '87 I've owned since '91. 8 to 12k for newer trucks in much worse shape and higher miles than mine. And that's for pre 2003 trucks.

It's handy to have relatives outside the rust belt who'll sell you their old vehicles or keep an eye out for a rust free pickup. Feel for you!

I'm about ready to lease a truck for my son. It'll be cheaper than buying a used one that'll nickel and dime me and has its cab corners rusted out. Problem is, jealous kids will just destroy it.

I picked up a 2017 XL STX F150 demo (3k miles) for $24k for my son. It's a heck of a nice truck. The 2.7l eco is awesome for power and economy.
