I would talk about the 4wd conversion. I'd assume you'd just copy a Quigley or Sportsmobile arrangement using suspension and drivetrain from a pick-up, which doesn't sound terrible, but i'm probably missing lot of stuff.
I recently did a camper build out of an older Sprinter bis thing from an assisted care facility for my kid sister. Full solar, mini kitchen, bed, equipment storage, the works.
My advice is that you can go pretty deep down that rabbit hole, so set realistic expectations about what your interior fit-out is going to look like. If you're thinking Tommy Bahama Airstream interior on a pop tent budget, that's gonna be hard.
Plan in advance hardcore. start accumulating bits and parts for the fit-out and be realistic about what will fit. There was a lot of gnashing of teeth about what needed to fit and what wouldn't fit at all.
if you have access to CAD software and can draw it all up to scale, that's a huge plus. If you have access to a complete cabinet building wood shop, that's even better. We were lucky enough to have both.
Be aware in the convertedcrapcancampercommunity, there is a strong effect of the 'next van'. The first one is never perfect, and you spend a lot of nights alone in your van thinking about how you could do it better next time. then there's always the next time.

Thanks for the input. The 4x4 conversion will be using well proven Ujoint components installed by yours truly.
Body and paint will be sub'd out, but I will be doing the interior and power work (solar), with an emphasis quality and simplicity.
