Find axle ratio/type on explorer

Hey guys, I'm hoping there may be a way to find the axle ratio and type (slip or posi) on an Explorer vehicle without doing the junkyard flip. I'm looking our local yard for one to replace on my 53 F100 and our yard has plenty but still sitting upright on ground. Is there enough info with a VIN # or other that will allow me to find that info... I'm looking for an axle with the disc brakes so only certain years will work. Much thanks for any help..

Hey Revamp,
Here are the axle codes for Explorer's. You can find these on the door jam's...
The axle code D4 for example would give you a limited slip 3.73 geared axle...

Explorer 43 Open 3200 3.08
41 Open 3200 3.27
42 Open 4.10
46 Open 3.73
45 Open 3200 3.55
D4 Limited Slip 3200 3.73
D2 Limited Slip 4.10
L73 Limited Slip 3.73

Good luck over there. We are finally thawing out here in Austin...
you would have to be pretty hardy to get out in a junk yard this past week.

Find axle/ratio/type on Explorer

Hey Jeff and Nicole.. I'm aware of the tranny tag BUT the salvage yard doesn't list the axle ratio when they pull the cars in their yard and put in their inventory and now they're sitting upright in yard. My yard has about 15 explorers there and I don't think they're about to lift them all for me to look at tags.

Hey Ben73058... your response looks to be exactly what I'm looking for... Guess I'll need to revisit my local salvage yard and see if your response prove true. I was hoping that the VIN # somehow would tell the info I needed but alas..I guess not..

No VIN of any FoMoCo vehicle has the axle info within it.

AXLE code printed on the Certification Label (1980 and later), or stamped on the Rating/Warranty Plate (prior to 1980).

The best way is to read the tag. Per the info that we gave you in your previous post:

(typically on the rear edge of the driver's door of 4-door models, or the rear of the driver's door opening below the beltline of 2-door models)
