6.0 engine starter problem

Hi to all out there. I've only visitd this site a few times, a little confusing on just how to post a new thread, post, or what ever it's called.
I have a 2005 F350 w/6.0 turbo diesel. Had starter replaced last spring. Went to store recently, came out & truck starter would just wind and whine, no flywheel engagement. Mechanic replaced Napa starter under warranty and now the starter whines when just trying to connect the battery(s) without even turning the key. I did try several attempts at starting truck when stranded at the local store, with no results but starter whining. Could I have created a dead short some where, and where would be a good place to start?? How do you get a schematic of the starting system? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Sounds like you got a bad starter.

The easiest way to check if it's wiring or starter would be to pull the solenoid connection at the pass fender, which looks like the old style in-line barrel fuse holder. With that separated, nothing upstream is shorted. If you want to take that further, pulling the small wire off the starter solenoid removes any power to the solinoid. If when reconnecting the batteries the starter is still spinning, then the solenoid is jammed closed in engagement as it is the switch to the actual starter motor.

The solenoid also engages the drive into the flywheel, so if the is a failure of some type with the solenoid mechanism, both motor engagement and no drive engagement could occur.

The worst case situation here would be missing flywheel teeth in conjunction with the starter, but that would not keep the starter engaged.
