Best engine
What is the best engine to do a rebuild/mod on when you consider performance, drivability, cost, and drivability of parts? Big block small block its not important, I just want something that will be just as good for that fell at home on the drag strip and just as comfortable idling around town. I also don't want to search the world for parts or have to spend a million dollars doing it.

It could be debated forever. My project is my 390 in my 79 but I'm not changing my mind on the 351w.

In the future could all the people who offer their opinion give some reasons to backup their choices. I would like to know why these engines are the best.

460 is the best because dollar for dollar it is hard to beat it's hp and troque output. Sure 351's have a ton of aftermarket parts and you can make them run like a scalded-dog, but for the same amount of money a 460 should make more hp and for sure will make more torque. MPG is not a valid argument with me, when talking trucks.

True about the about the 460 and power. They are brute even in stock form. You can build some serious power with a 460. I like the windsor because parts all over the place and they have less front end weight for racing. But if he wasn't going to race the 300 would last forever.

A stroker 460 is the cheapest/easiest way to 600+ horsepower on the planet short of doing nitrous. I believe you can run near 500 horsepower on 87 octain.
I have been building and racing Chevy's my whole life but was raised Ford for my daily drivers as we always had very good luck with them as far as durable and reliable. My next 460 in my daily driver will be a 545" with aluminum heads and 8.5 to 9-1 compression for the cheap fuel. Get a kit from Scat with the good rods and forged pistons and it will live to 6500 rpm and be drivable and easy to live with. Big time bang for your bucks and easy to build. No clearancing required. I would get it balanced and once it's done you will be able to go out and restripe all the roads in your county with nice thick black lines. I can hardly wait to put one in my VAN! What a sleeper. Even the almost stock 460 is a real hoot to rod around.

Ok if I am going to go for a 460 what is the best year to look for? What things should I look for and consider when buying one of these engines? What type of transmissions can I use? And finally what should I pay for the engine running? And not running?

And about the 460, I am still a little leery about putting one in my truck. I have always pictured big blocks as boat engines. 99% of the time that I see them they are behind big a** Lincolns and Mercs. The things always seem to do 0-60 in about 60 seconds or so. Is this just a miss conception because I want speed? Oh yah the truck has 3.89 gears, would that make a difference?
