Angry Where's my Gun!!!

Howdy all! This 1998 F-150 Triton 4.6 is drivin me nuts! I know several people with a 4.6L. I was told by most of these people that 20 to 25 mpg is the average. I am a lucky man to get 14 mpg. The truck runs fine though I am still dealing with an EGR problem, which will be dealt with today! There are no gas leaks or smells. No real hesitation, stalling or missfires. The plugs and wires are new and all that! So does anyone have any ideas on what to do? Thanx!

Howdy,

Not sure who told you that 20 - 25 MPG is an average for a F150 4.6L.

I own a 2003 4 X 4 Extended cab 5 speed manual 4.6L. 5k miles on the odo. I stared with 15 mpg and now average around 17. This may be 1/2 city and 1/2 hiway miles on average.

I drive conservatively (whatever that means).

If folks could really get 20 - 25 MPG on a F150 4.6L V8, everyone would be selling their Focus and upgrading.

I have responded to many a folk complaining of MPG and there are many theads with MPG as the main topic. There may be an occasional 18 or 19 MPG that someone gets but rarely will someone indicate that on a regular basis they see more than this.

But one thing that I have failed to mention on other threads is how much I love my truck. It feels competent and I never get back ache or wish the seats were designed better etc.

If your truck runs great and feels great and gets the job done, perhaps with your style of driving, type of driving (city/hiway) load in the bed etc. 14 or so is about right.

However, if you are running hiway at 55 MPH with no load in the bed then perhaps 14 is an issue.

Do you have non-standard tires and the speedometer has not been recalibrated? You might want to check your actual miles on the odo against one of the sets of mile post markers that are sometimes on the interstates.

Thanks Chip! you are right about the tires. The aren't the originals. And my odo does need calibrated. Because in order to do 75mph, my odo will have to say that I am doing 68. I never thouht about that! So I guess when you think about it, it says that I am losing mileage when I am not. Or just not as much as I thought! Again Thanx!

You can get 20 to 25 mpg if you are going down hill with a 5000lb trailer pushing you all of the way.
Other than that, I wouldn't expect much more than 14 to 16 in town.

Where's my Gun!!!

I think someone was huffing gas, I have 02 f150 5.4 4x4 and 12 is the best around town here in so. florida and 15 or 16 (on a good day)on the hwy. Now when i'm in Georgia i get around 15 in the city and about 17.5 to 18 on the hwy. but as soon as i hit florida again it drops back down.
