Shift Kits

I'm considering putting a shift kit in my '92 E4OD (w/5.8l). My question is: Are shift kits harder or easier on a transmission? In other words all things being equal will a tranny with a shift kit have a longer life expectency than one without?

Also, with the above questions in mind, I see that B&M has both a mechanical and a electronic shift kit for the E4OD. Anyone have opinions on the pros and cons of these two (other than the obvious differences in installation). Would it be a good idea to use both?

Thanks

A shift kit is easier on the tranny because it reduces the time of the shifts, which in turn reduces heat and clutch pack wear. Anything that makes the tranny last longer is a good thing.

A shift kit will put more strain on other driveline components....but I installed my shift kit 70,000 miles ago and I haven't had single problem yet.

I went with the B&M shift kit and the shifts have been flawless and crisp as well as very consistent. I went with the stage two springs for a very quick shift. From what I remember of the installation, the kit requires you drop the valve body, change a few springs, and enlarge a couple of fluid passages. I installed mine with the tranny in the vehicle so I could not perform the pump mod, but the electrical connection included in the kit worked just fine. They recommend performing either the pump mod or using the electrical connector provided.....but not both.

Shift Kits

There have been a number of posts here about the B&M electronic shift improver actually damaging the transmission. The kits that actually go in the tranny are by far the best choice.

I tried the electronic shift kit by B&M, and was not impressed. I removed it, sold it, and installed a B&M shift improver, but I used the milder of the springs. It shifts noticeable faster and firmer, especially when you really get on it. Overall, I haven't had any trouble and I am glad I installed it.
