which front diff do i have?
Hi, i need to know which front differential i have, so i can order a limited slip. My truck is an 82 F-250 4x4, with a 8700 gvw. The tag in the front is barely legible, i can make out 3.54. The vin is 1FTHF26G3CRA25363, and the axle code is D1.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ford did not use the solid Dana 60 (monobeam) axle on any of their trucks from 80 to 85 1/2, after then it was only used on the F350's.
A simple way to differentiate between the 2 front axles offered for those years is to look at where the hub sticks thru the rim.
If the hub completely fills the hole, it's a Dana 50 IFS.
If the hub is smaller then the center hole, is's a Dana 44 IFS HD
(both of these are 8 lugs, F250 or F350)
Bronco"s and F150's all had Dana 44 IFS (not the HD)
(all of these are 5 lugs)
Now you're going to catch yourself looking at the front axle on every ford truck you see!
Good Luck!

In '82, Ford used Dana 50 axles on HD trucks (GVW 8500 lbs. or more). The Dana 44HD axle was used only on "light-duty" F250s (GVW less than 8500 lbs.).
Another comparison you can make to ID the axle is compare the hub extensions with 5-lug trucks (F150/Bronco). If yours is the same size, it's a Dana 44HD, if it's bigger, it's a Dana 50.
