351W to replace a 302...Will this engine work?
I picked this 351W up at the junk yard to replace a 302 in a 1995 F150. The engine is marked with the F4TE stamp. It came out of a 1995 E350 van. Will this engine work? I plan on keeping the 302 computer and the AODE 4R70W transmission in the truck.
I also has a question about the oil cooler. Can this be used in a truck, or do I need to just remove it and use a regular oil filter? I do not see how it would clear the engine cross member in a truck.
Also, the thermactor system on the 351W penetrates the back of the exhaust manifolds. On my 302 the thermactor system penetrates the back of the heads in the smog ports. My original plan was to install GT40 heads and long tube headers. Should I just keep the stock headers and use the thermactor system as is?
Any other thoughts?
Thanks.

Yes you can remove the oil adapter and just mount it right on the block.
If you are installing longtubes then you're not keeping the stock cats so the whole air injection system serves no purpose and can be completely deleted.
You will need a 28oz AOD/4R70w flexplate for this combo, you cannot use the one from the 302(wrong balance) or one that may have come with the 5.8 as it will be for an E4OD which has the wrong offset.
Good luck with the swap.

Exceptionally nice score.
You'll have to drill the GT-40 heads if you're wedded to keeping the air injection.
The EGR connection is common on shorties, but I've yet to see them on long tubes, but no reason you can't add a bung if you want.
Might want to use your truck valve covers.
I dig that extended oil dip stick.
Keep us posted.

Ok, doing a little research, it looks like to use the long tube headers, I will need to relocate the catalytic converters, which makes the truck not legal. I do need to replace the truck exhaust, as there really isn't one right now. Is there a legal exhaust solution that still improves performance?

I guess what you need to answer to us is are you trying to:
Stick to the letter of federal, state (can't imagine Vir-ginny is that strict, but who knows?) laws because you feel you have to or...
Your own green conscious?
I run a cat, EGR & thermactor is long gone, but solenoids are electrically connected but still set non-critical 212 codes.
The Feds & EPA wouldn't be happy, but the state of MS could care less.
I have essentially what you're wanting to do in my truck. (recently converted to MAF)

What I am after is no hassles during inspection time. Keeping the pollution down is fine with me also, and the exhaust "stink". I know I personally hate to get behind an older, poorly maintained vehicle that has that bad exhaust smell. As I said, I'll see what my inspector says about it.
I will keep the EGR hook up, as some other threads indicate keeping this helps prevent engine knock and improves mileage. We will see about the thermactor system.

Well, if you have an inspector that is **** about 100% of this list you'd be SOL about anything not original:
