Good evening, I have mounted the mirrors and started the wiring. Everything was going fairly well until the wiring of the mirror switch. I'm having problems pushing the female contacts into the mirror connector. I ordered the following from Mouser:

Mouser #: 538-30700-1080
Mfr. #: 30700-1080
Desc.: Automotive Connectors HDAC64 DR FEMALE 8 C ALE 8 CKT
GRAY POL 1
1 1 Pending Pending -

Mouser #: 571-1393366-1-CT
Mfr. #: 1393366-1 (Cut Strip)
Desc.: Automotive Connectors V23540X7000Y 21=GET Cut Strip

The contacts seem to be too big for the connector, did I order the the wrong contacts? The connector mates to the mirror switch as it should, but the contacts are trying to force the dividers in the connector apart.

Appreciate any suggestions, Thanks

If you used a larger gauge wire than was meant to have that may be the problem. Just guessing.

That is my guess, I'm using 16 AWG. Believe I read above others were using 16 AWG with these parts, but I'm not having much luck pushing the terminals into the block.

Appreciate your help.

Does it seem to be stopping at the crimp or the wire? I remember one of my crimps not being tight enough and it was stopping me from pushing the wire and connector in fully. I just squeezed it a bit harder and it was successful. I know the wires I used just fit with no room to spare.

Mine are stopping at the crimp for the bare wire, I will squeeze it some more. I wanted to insure I ordered the correct contacts since they seemed slightly big.

Appreciate the help!

I may have some left over connectors and if I remember I will try to take a picture with some items in it for perspective.

I had one left of the female connector pins. Here it is in size next to a quarter.

Do your crimps look like the ones I show on the first page?

I used that special tool, if I hadn't I don't think it would have worked properly. Also you should only have the wire coating going through the lower part to be crimped. The upper part should be the exposed wire.

Yes, my crimps look like the ones you pictured. Thanks to your great write up, I ordered the parts you listed saving myself alot of work. I ordered the special tool and the crimps are looking good. I was concerned the housing was being packed too much with the 16AWG wire making the contacts tough to push into the connector. I plan to work on the wiring tomorrow with a good chance to get things finished up.

Thanks for taking time to help and the write up that helped many of us with a mirror upgrade.

I wanted to post an update to my difficulties in case someone has the same issue. I couldn't get the contacts to fit into the housings correctly with 16 AWG wire. Switched to 18 AWG wire, the contacts easily pressed into the housings. Connectors are now complete.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Tim-

Posting here because your PM box is full.

Really nice work and I'm curious whether you'd be interested in assembling another harness, for a fee that would make it worth your time?

Figured that it wouldn't take much for you to repeat what you've already (recently) done, and maybe even make a few others at the same time. Confident that they would get sold quickly. Would this be of interest? If so- please just PM me and let me know your thoughts.

Many thanks,
Ross
