Today is the day........
Sure Eric. I have the Dometic Elite Full Cover on my three slides. Carefree and Dometic are pretty much the only two choices and I would say both are of equal quality. Whichever way you go, I would suggest the full cover units so that when rolled up, they are under an aluminum box. They look nicer and it adds a layer of protection going down the road or winding through a campground.
I let XLR do mine on one of her trips back to the motherland... I didn't want to do the drilling either but have since on different projects without fear. Mine already had the track built into the gutters that the topper slid into but did still need the holes for the brackets in the slides themselves.
Having a mini heat wave here today. Up to 45 right now so I decided to do a little project on the General. Recently I noticed a spot in the roof for a dome light. I looked it up on the Polaris website and found it cost $70. Pretty steep for what it is just like any other OE accessory. So, I decided to make up my own kit with an extra LED light I acquired from XLR last summer. It has a built in pushbutton switch so I figured it would work for the application. It's not recessed like the OE one would be, I did luck out finding that the XLR light's mounting holes perfectly lined up with the holes in the roof for the OE accessory headliner so it screwed right in. I ran the power wires through some loom across the ceiling utilizing more of the headliner hole locations, down through the roll cage tubing, above the frame in the wheel well, and into the front hood area where the factory buss is. There I tied it in with an old fuse holder that was on the shelf. Actually, all the parts were on the shelf so it was a 0 cost install. Not as clean as the OE one but free. I know that's not like me but I think it works well.
Just thought I'd drop by and say hi. We're in Quartzsite for a bit. Left Ontario on Dec 27, 4 travel days, hit Benson AZ for a week, Organ Pipe for 2 days, Imperial Dam for a almost 2 weeks.
The Chev L5P tows our fiver great. I'm thinking the F350 must have been down on power or something, it felt like it was working to maintain 60, with the Chev I have to watch I'm not running too fast. From the dash display I avg'd 10.2mpg on the trip down running 70-75mph. Had a low day of 8.8 with a strong headwind, best was 16.5 for a while when we had a tail wind. Scaled at 23400# with trailer tanks empty, truck tank full. About 100# over the the rear GAWR. The SRW only makes a noticeable difference over the DRW when behind a truck that makes a mess of the air, like a car hauler. Would like to downsize the fiver this yr as 41' LOA is really more than 2 of us need and is a tight fit in Nat Parks. Then I could get a SxS and hang an IdahoTote off the back too.
