2.9L poor engine performance.

Oh just another thought, My dead 88 caravan, well it was having problems with power and it was the dam egr valve. that is easy to check and easy to fix and probably hasn't been touched and needs replacing on your ride anyways. But it was definitly hurting my van while it was still alive, RIP caravan.

Hi we just purchased a 1987 Bronco II 2.9 and are experiencing performance problems. When it warms up it seems to have no power barely over 50 mph If I leave it sit for a while it comes back Help Help

Ruggys37, have you already tried some of the things we suggested to terrysmail (tuneup, computer codes, fuel pressure, timing, etc.)?

I don't know how to get the codes. We have changed plugs and I checked the bypass hose in the tank Pump seems to have plenty of pressure We didn't check timing.

Ken00 has posted instructions for pulling EEC-IV codes as well as a code list in his tech info post. He's also posted instructions for checking fuel pressure. I can't remember if he has instructions for checking timing, but it's pretty basic. Most important is to be sure to unplug the SPOUT connector when checking base timing.

BII forum -> Tech Info (at top of forum) -> click on links to "how to pull EEC-IV codes", "how to check fuel pressure", "2 digit EEC-IV codes", "how to check ignition timing" (if there) or whatever he called the individual links. He's got a lot of information there (some applies to the 2.9, some doesn't), worth a few minutes to scan through that post and learn a few things.

Anything he doesn't have in his tech info post should be available in a DIY repair manual (Haynes or Chiltons). If print manuals are too old-fashioned, www.autozone.com has a free electronic equivalent of a Chiltons manual on their website. I would suggest that as a good resource.

SPOUT connector is a shorting bar that disables the EEC-IV computer's ability to advance timing, allowing you to properly check and adjust base timing. Otherwise, checking timing is like on any other engine. SPOUT connector on the 2.9 is usually in the main harness kind of hanging over the passenger valve cover.

Wonder if it could be a vacuum leak when things warm up and expand. Still say it could be a egr valve, or something, yea or something. There are so many things it could be, like the timing you guys are talking about above, plugs or plug wires could be arcing in the wrong place on the plug or out the wires somewhere. That still sounds just like what my van did. Anyways, I'll shut up, So many things to check, air filter, Oxy sensor, maybe getting real rich once warmed up, Or pressure leaking past a blown head gasket, or dang alot of possibilities for a power loss. Injector cutting out, dang so many. Again I'll shut up, good luck.
