engine timing 351m

hi. i'm looking for some help on timing a 351m
it's newly rebuilt (i hope) and still on the stand. my question is
placement of #1 cylinder, before or after tdc?
and when to alighn the timing chain?i guess timing info in general.
it's my dad's ranchero but if it starts it's mine!!!!!
any advice is appreciated!

engine timing 351m

#1 piston at TDC on compression stroke.
install cam gear with the dots lined up.
At this point the balancer should line up to 0* mark.
Line up the balancer to 10*BTDC and drop the distributor in pointing to the #1 plug wire on the cap.

Now snug up the hold down and turn the distributor all the way retarded (counter clockwise) then hook up your timing light to the #1 wire and turn on the ignition key. Hold the triger on the light and turn the distributor clockwise SLOWLY. When the light flashes your are perfectly timed to 10* BTDC.

If when you have the #1 at TDC and in the firing position (when you use the finger in the hole method) and the marks on the balancer are not very close to 0*, you have the cam installed wrong. Either advanced or retarded depending on where the marks line up.

Don't forget to prelube it before before dropping in the distributor and starting it. Good luck.
