Power Windows Work Intermittently

Over the last few years my power windows in my '99 Super Duty have started working intermittently. The problem seems to be with both the main controls on the drivers door and the control on the passenger door. Sometimes both of them have problems operating, sometimes just one. Does not make a lot of sense. Could I have bad switches or do I need to check something else?

Any help here would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

I'm Having the Same Problem!, Also thought it was in the main switch. I popped the panel off checked the wires and all seemed good. Caught it when it quit working and popped panel off again and wiggled the wires and buggered around with the switches and nothing.
Next day I started up and they worked just fine??

wonder if its how it gets its power when you turn the key?
its got me buffaloed.

I had the same problem. It was a wire in the black boot between the driver door and the cab that was broken. Sometimes it would touch and make contact and sometimes it would come apart. Cut the boot open, found the wire, fixed it and sealed the boot back up. Problem solved.

I had the same problem, after awhile it stopped working at all, with the window open of course, and it was a wire in the boot at the door. I replaced the entire wiring harness at that point because there are a lot of wires in those harnesses and I figured if one was bad the rest weren't far behind. The complete harness at the door was around $130.00 bucks as I recall.....very pricey at ford. I'm glad only the one door has done it so far, I believe if the others bother I'll just split the boot open and fix the bad wire.

Is it pretty easy to replace the harness?

The wires in the boot fatigue from getting worked each time the door is moved. Thats the first place I usually check for this intermittent problem. Then go at the door switches then to the motor and its leads and most importantly the grounds. Try moving the door around when actuating the switch see if that induces the fault.

My solution

The intermittent problem showed up on the drivers door of my '97 Mustang Cobra. It only happened when I parked in the sun with the windows rolled up. Now whenever it's sunny I roll down the windows a few inches so heat doesn't build up in the interior, and the door surface is not super hot to the touch. Problem solved.

Power Window Problem

Seems like my problem increases when the weather is somewhat cold. I will check the wiring in the boot and if good the motors. The main switch looked good. I pulled it out then apart and checked and cleaned all the contact points. WIll let you all know what I find so others can learn from it.

Cold makes sense. Cold wires shrink and are less flexible.

Mine were slow ,stopped, Then work again
It may be a simple case of a bit of Graphite Powder in the window tracks
Mine work like a charm now

Cheers,

For some reason I'm not getting my notifications when people respond to the posts I've commented on???
If you were asking me about the harness replacement I didn't do it my self, my mechanic did it but I see the old harness and it looked straight forward...hope this helps.

Power Windows

I am still having problems but I tried something yesterday. The window stopped about three inches from the top. Out of frustration I pulled down on the window and in moved about a 1/4 inch. Then it started working again. This makes me wonder if there is a dead spot in the motor.

Any thoughts?

Power Windows Work Intermittently

Have you taken the door apart and looked at things yet? We've pretty much told you what to look for.
