Temp guage testing

I tried the search feature.....no luck.
I thought about posting in the electrical section but it looked like more late model stuff, so i'll try here.
I'm sure this has been discussed.

My temp guage is pegged at hot with the key on. I know it's not that hot.
I undid the wire at the sending unit......needle still pegged.
I grounded the wire at the sending unit.....still pegged.
Turn the key off and the needle floats down to the cold end, so the needle isn't jammed.
So do i need a new guage ? How can i test the gauge ?

Temp guage testing

I had a similar problem with my oil pressure gauge recently. Turned out it wasn't grounded well enough. The gauge you can check with an ohm reader, but check the obvious things first: are the wires frayed? or bad connection to the sending unit? Is the ground on bare metal or painted metal? or a surface with undercoating on it? These are a few of the obvious things to check for. Worked for me and I was glad not to have to replace the gauge.

Good luck,
Daryl

I think the wire that goes from the guage to the sending unit may be shorted to ground. You may want to unhook the wire at the guage and see if it still pegs to hot. If so you may need to run a new wire or find the short.
