Baker

No, not Tammy Faye and Jim, but Baker, Ca.

World's Largest Thermometer, Baker, California

Baker's giant thermometer is up for sale | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

"Herron died in 2007. In 2012 the Baker thermometer stopped working and was put up for sale. Its owner blamed its shutdown on a bad economy and a thermometer-topping monthly electric bill. In 2014 the thermometer was purchased by Herron's daughter, and his widow paid to repair the thermometer. It was back in operation in July 2014. The Herrons say that the gift shop, to be named "TEMP134," will sell signed and numbered light bulbs from the original thermometer."

"In September, Pike told Nevada Public Radio that the thermometer's light bill was about $8,000 a month. When the economy went south, he turned it off to focus on his other businesses in town but said he still had hopes of lighting it up when the economy rebounded."

Last time we visited in 2009, it was pretty run down. Chatted with Mrs Herron (daughter) yesterday while others used the bathroom. She works on weekends in the gift shop. She sells the old light bulbs as souvenirs. Open house in October this year–possible G2G.

Was toasty yesterday.

While there I picked up a book authored by Bill Mann. Guess what's on pg. 44?

8 grand a month for juice? They need to put LED's in that thing.

Does the book give any insight as to what the heck the "megaphone" is and who put it there?

The book by Mike Mann has no further clues than we've come up with in the 'where am I' thread. 49 other mysterious sites are described.

Mrs Herron asked if I could request FTE members to 'like' the Thermometer on Facebook.

Indeed Steve, when the family 'rebuilt' the thermometer, they installed LED's. The MFG'r only warrantied them for 3 years, but should save some on the 'lectric bill. Mrs Herron didn't yet know the cost/month.

This mural is inside the Vallero station; pretty well done IMO.

Excellent pics. Too hot for me though, especially this time of year.

Happy to see the thermometer up and working again. I added a LIKE to their page.

Other than that, I figure it is not a coincidence that they called the place Baker.

Hot and dry. Opposite of today. It's been like a sauna here. Worse than I've seen west of the Mississippi.
