Model Designations

This may sound like a stupid question to you guys who are more knowledgeable about these 73-79 Ford Trucks than I am, but here goes: I just bought a 79 F150 4x4; what is the difference between an F150 and an F100??? I know that on "modern" Fords, F150 designates 1/2 ton, F250 designates 3/4 ton, etc. Did the F100 have a payload of less than 1/2 ton, or did Ford change the designations somewhere along the line???

The F150 is a beefed-up F100. Plus there were emissions differences as well, the 100 having more emissions equipment and regulations than the 150.
