I'm tuning my truck up tomorrow before I go away for the weekend hunting. I'm gonna change the fuel filter, but I can't find the switch behind the passenger side kick panel to de-pressurize the fuel system. Could it be somewhere else? Is there any other way of de-pressurizing it? My other problem occurs when I'm pulling out of a stop. My truck is REALLY sluggish. It just doesn't wanna get up and go. Could it possibly be the fuel filter? It hasn't been changed in at least 80,000 miles. Thanks for the help.

by the way: 1989 F150, 302,reg cab, 4x4, 4 speed, 194,000 miles

 

You can relieve the pressure at the schraeder valve on the fuel mainfold. The inertia switch won't help - it just disconnects power from the fuel pump, and hopefully, you already have it shut off. I have never been able to change a filter without getting a little fuel on me, so be careful. There is always some gravity feed dripping while the filter is disconnected. Of course, I'm always on a creeper on my back instead of standing under the vehicle on a lift, like I would ideally like to be when I work under it.

The sluggishness is another issue that could have dozens of answers, and I don't have any of them, but I doubt it's your filter.

i thought it was on the drivers side when i did mine. could be mistaken though. have a look there.

 

You don't need to depressurize the system on your 89. I have a 89 F-150 302 as well, and I can change the filter very quickly on it. The filter is before the high pressure pump.
