Well, I have good news and bad news about my range time this weekend with the 300 win mag.
The good news: The gun shoots great. Excellent trigger. Manageable recoil for a magnum load. Cycles loads easily. No malfunctions from the gun or the ammo. We shot 180 grain soft nose federals.
The bad news: (which is kinda good news) Both of my scopes are crap. Both are old, used and probably abused. One used to be a decent Swift off an old sks and took a lot of shells to the body. (sks's eject up not out for those that are wondering) It won't hold any adjustments for more than two shots. The other one is a low end Bushnell that has poor eye relief and I never really liked it. So the good news is I am shopping for a new scope. I've already got one picked out just trying to find the right deal.
Once I get the new scope mounted I get to start all over again.

I ran about 40 rounds threw the new gun today. Still need to pick up a few hollow points but wasn't gonna pay what they wanted for them. $45 for a box of 25 just seemed way To high... even with a 25% discount.
What kinda holster is that Bob? I need to pick one up for the new 40, I had a Versacarry for the .380 but don't want to go that route on this one.

The M&P is a nice piece. For personal defense hollow points I like gold dots.
Bob, the other day I saw a match style target witness completely decked out with barrel extension and big money scope. It was sweet.
Had a good range session with the new scope. Got on paper and started to close in with 180grn. Then fine tuned with 165grn. I'll hunt with 165grn. So far the gun shoots fantastic. Great trigger. No issues at all so far. And now with a proper scope nice groups.

I prefer Hornady ammo, in just about everything. I use the Critical Duty +P rounds for my fullsize handguns (4" barrel or longer), harder bullet which has some barrier penetration capability, penetrates gel to about 14-15", and expands nice and reliably. For shorter than 4" barrels I like Critical Defense +P, softer bullet with less barrier capability, but increased reliability of expansion for the lower velocities. I'm a bit of a Hornady fanboy, but it's because of all the effort they pour into making their rounds and explaining what each round is specifically esigned to do.
If/When NCPPSB allows us to run duty rifles, I'll be running Hornady TAP Urban for my AR. Soft projectile for reliable expansion and minimal risk of over penetration.
