I got this 390 without pcv, just tubes on the valve covers. I opened the hood to listen for rod knock and other weird rattles recently and noticed the blowby is really pouring outta the tubes now, a steady stream of smoke just from idleling. Looks like two to 3 times the smoke comes off the end of a ciggerete. It didn't do this before. Is this a problem I should worry bout?? I really don't care unless it's gonna kill my motor all of a sudden while I'm running it hard at work, and leave me to walk 50+miles to civiliztion.
Any opinions?? this motor guzzled 4 quarts of oil in the last 1000miles too, no burning or leaks.
Well the "blow-by" itself is no real problem. Mine does the same thing since i took out my PCV. Instead of pulling the air out of the crankcase and pulling it down the carb to be burned your motor is simply venting it into the atmosphere. This may or may not be legal where you are, but is not a mechanical problem.
4 qts of oil disappearing in 1000 miles IS something I would worry about, though. Do you have oil baffles in the holes in your valve covers or just tubes? You should definitely have baffles in there!
