was wondering if anybody else has had this problem . front diff does not leak but seems to get alot of oil coming out vent hose. enough to make a mess and require more top offs. TIA, dan
perhaps part of my problem could be wrong oil? ive been using 80-90 wt and did a search and see it may suppose to be atf. something about boiling out gear oil out thru vent? what are you folks using?
I have exactly the same problem, due to exactly the same cause. The factory loads the front diff with ATF, but I was convinced by guys on this forum that I need to use gear oil to provide protection that the gears needed when under heavy load. Ever since I changed out the ATF with gear lube, it's been puking out of the vent tube. Since I don't believe that front diff gets nearly the load that a real truck diff would get, and that Ford used ATF, I started to top it off with ATF again. I should drop it again and dump out all the gear lube to be thorough.
and I towed an 18ft 4000 lb TT thousands of miles in the Rockies, Cascade moutains and curvy hilly coast hwys. never had a drip out of my front axle.
Used top quality 75w90 Mobil 1 since the Dana 28 holds so little lube, less than a quart. Dana specs 75w90 hypoid for these tiny 6 5/8" dia. ring gear diffs.
a GL5 level lube for hypoids.
Mine runs quieter with the Mobil 1 75w90 lube, now 180k miles.
would I waste money on synthetic oil in the engine, NO.
Ford put these same Dana 28s in early Bronco IIs and Rangers frontends with a IFS housing and they filled and spec'd them with 75w90 from the factory.
Cooling airflow over the front diff. is extremely restricted by all the metal surrounding it.
the Ford ATF in mine when I change it the first time was black and smelled oxidized from overheating, a sure sign of lube breakdown and overload.
the only thing that boiled over and overheated in mine were my feet when it was more than 70d F outside.
I also used Mobil 1 gear lube in the front diff, and I didn't tow anything or climb long mountain roads. But after every long drive, about an hour, the stuff pukes out the vent tube, gets blown onto the Y-pipe and catalytic converter, and smokes.
The original 20 year old ATF that I dumped out of the diff when I changed it looked pink and clear, and had no burnt smell.
It's odd that we're getting such vastly different results doing the same things.
