Angry Timing a dead engine

Ok i can admite it this is my first ford and its first bad ford conculousion.

I am in the procces of adding a gear drive to my 1978 F250 400 and as bad luck would have it its not going very well.

First 2 auto parts stores said a 351C would fit and 351M-400M series family motor and even edelbrock says it will fit as well and low and behold there both wrong.

Now my question after messing with the gear drive for over 2 days and ordering a new one for a 400M the timming is bound to be way off and i am wondering how to time a dead engine ie get the new gears to line up with out the use of a timming chain

Any help is greatly needed. Thank you

Timing a dead engine

Do you have a severely built engine, or do you just want the gear noise?

I've never seen gear drives made specifically for the 351M/400. What brand are you getting and what's the part number?

To fit a 351C gear drive to the 400, all you have to do is grind down the front main bearing boss on the front of the block to make room for the idler gear pins.

As for timing, the crank and cam gears should have some kind of alignment (index) marks, and the timing set should come with instructions that explain how to set timing.

Timing a dead engine

Its moderetly built about 350=400 horse maybe not sure tho no dyno

ill find the part # i still have it laying around somewhere but its esspicaly made for the 351m-400 series family engins and its made by pete jackson.

I do have the timming marks but as with any timming chain or gear set you have to line everything up and i just wanna make sure that my timming is correct and theres nothing within the instructions that say anything about that unfortunitly.

lol i just found the part # PJJ-351-14C-N the (N) is for noisy but they have a quiet one aswell just take the (N) out and its the same part # and i got it from summitracing.com

That part is advertised to fit 351C/351M/400 engines, but you'll have the same problem that you had with the other set. If you notice, in the description it says, "Minor machining may be required." That's what I was telling you about grinding down the front main bearing boss on the front of the block.

To get your timing correct, all you have to do is make sure the distributor rotor is pointing at or near the #1 position on the distributor cap when the cam gear index mark is lined up the way the timing set instructions say.

If you get it wrong, the cam and distributor will be 180 degrees out of sync. If that happens, all you have to do is pull the distributor, rotate the rotor 180 degrees, and stick it back in.
