And had the I-58 met the Indianapolis a little earlier, the whole scenario would have been delayed and revised.

The Indianapolis was one MEAN looking heavy cruiser, a real tragedy for the crew and a magnificent ship.

When something happens out on 26, there's not much you can do about it.

It's a LONG ways around the backside of Hood.

YES.........It was a tragedy that should not have happened.........That crew should have been rescued in days........

Don't forget.........It took everyone to win that one.......Including the folks back home......

Would have probably been delayed a bunch as the US only had enough material left at the time for two fire crackers........

Yes, it did take everyone and everything including the metal kitchen sinks!

I read the book...it shouldn't have happened to start with and then yes, the crew should have been rescued much, much sooner.

Cruisers seemed to have bad luck..........The bloody nose the Japanese gave us at "Iron bottom sound" almost all heavy/light cruisers lost, the USS Savannah, the first US Navy ship taken out by a guided missile (fired from a German bomber off Anzio)...........and the Indianapolis, a horrible tragedy.

Stupid wet siders unable to negotiate the hills. Combine that with the apparent necessity to investigate every little bump in the road (no offense intended to current or past LEO). The wreck happened. Get the injured off to a hospital. Then scrape the mess out of the way.

BTW... still making slow steady progress on the garage.

Yes, took 5.5 hours to drive 150 miles. You never know about US 26 in the winter. Skiers and drivers that know nothing about snow driving!!

Yell snow and two things happen:
  1. Portland Metro has a flipping wigged out panic attack!
  2. Fully 25% of them put ski's and snow boards on their roofs and head up a mountain to have their flipping wigged out panic attack!

The hope is that the bump in the road is an "exchange info" and get the hell off my highway.
Unfortunately, in todays day and age of litigation,
  • if it appears to be serious injuries,
  • a possibility of turning fatal,
  • or a confirmed fatal.....
Then it literally turns into a full fledged homicide investigation. If that is the case, can you say "Road Closed" for 3 to 6 hours.
