Rust removal

Hey everyone.

Did something for the first time today. I removed some surface rust from the chrome plated side view mirror of my 73 F-350. It was super easy. And I literally used about $0.50 worth of materials.

First of all snapped a pic of what my mirror looked like. Nasty!!

This is everything you need to get the job done;
1- super fine steel wool (0000 grit)
2- glass cleaner
3- paper towel

Step one; moisten the area with glass cleaner...

Step two; very lightly, in small circles, use the 0000 grit steel wool to rub the rust off your chromed surface. Wash, rinse and repeat if necessary.

Step three; wipe off the rusty sludge with the paper towel and admire yourself, and the job you did, in the reflection.

I'm new to this 'keeping your truck beautiful' thing. It's the first truck I've owned, and I love it. I found some tutorials on YouTube that helped me out. Hopefully this will help out others that have surface rust problems.

I have recently done that to my bumpers and it does work. My question is when the chrome has already started to peel off, how do you treat the rust without destroying the rest of the chrome?

Oh man. Your guess is as good as mine. Like I said before, I'm new at this. I'm sure somebody here has an answer.

Another thing you can use to clean up chrome is aluminum foil, Ball it up, the more wrinkled the better, and moisten the area with a can of coke. The acidity in coke will soften the chemical bond the rust makes without harming the remaining finish. Aluminum foil will scrub off the rust, but is too soft to damage the chrome.

It will also work on rust stains on polished metal. I wouldn't reccommend trying it on painted metal though.
