Unhappy Brakeing problem

I just bought this Bronco a short while ago and it has started a brakeing prob. the brakes don't seem balanced at all, when I apply the brakes the pedal almost seems to want to go down by it's self and has on a couple of occasions, the pedal just stayed applied not in a lockup situation but a firmly applied feeling as I was slowing down quickly without my foot on the pedal , It also seems as if the back brakes are not applying as the front end will dive, I have pulled all the wheels and all pads and shoes are like new as far as lineings are concerned. Whats strange to me is that this does not happen all the time, most of the time the brakes work normaly and have a very balanced stop. does anyone have any thoughts about this? Having grown up on a farm and driveing vehicles with less than perfect brakes this does not startle me when it happens but I need to get this problem fixed ASAP as to preserve the safety of the people around me on the highway. unlike some of the farm veicles the floor pans still in good shape on this vehicle so I can't drag my feet to aid the stopping process ..........Terry

Brakeing problem

First, can you see any visible leaks? (Wet spots on the calipers in front or on the lower edge of drums/inner tire walls at the rear)? This is a sign of dead wheel cylinder(s) or caliper(s).

Sounds more like you may be dealing with a dead or half-dead master cylinder. With the engine running, step on the brake while parked. Not hard, just like you would to stop normally. If the pedal remains firm under your foot after a few seconds (10-15) go back and look for leaks elsewhere, if it "fades" or begins to drop under your foot with steady pressure applied, you have a master cylinder with a problem.

The front end "dive" could be a result of a failed rear portion of the master cylinder thereby leaving only the front brakes operable. If this is that case, its a definite "must fix" ASAP. Hope this helps.
