Transmission swap thoughts C4 to AOD or 4R70W

Hey guys,

So I think I should have a good bit a refund money to do my project but I have been on the fence with that to get. my 73 dent has a c4 transmission which as you know is terrible for high way cruising. So I am looking to swap with an AOD or a 4r70W. I have been on the fence with the two because one will be easier now the other will be easier overall. What do you guys think? Also do any of you know how to rebuild or knows some who rebuilds them?

I will eventually have dual exhaust and a 306 crate engine so I want to plan ahead accordingly.

I have been on the 73-79 dent forums and they gave me their opinions, but I want to ask you guys since maybe whats available or possible in GA would sway my judgment.

Thanks again guys for all your suggestions.

I have no idea on either swap so I am of no help. I think I would go with the easier over all option, but thats me.

The one that would best fit your new engine when you upgrade.
So explain the differences, pros and cons? May help someone else out later down the road.

Classic to modern retrofit.

Ok guys,

There is some good stuff out there if you are interested in doing this swap in a classic ford or any truck that didn't have a OD gear.

Instead of re creating the wheel, I will link some of the research I have done. I just bought a rebuilt transmission from a 99 explorer off of Craigslist. These transmission are the best solution and have the widest gear ratio stock. The only kicker is you are going to need a stand alone controller unless you can wire something up yourself and you will need to shorten your driveshaft. I was originally going to go a mechanical AOD but When I learned that I might want to change gear ratios for better daily cruising I decided on the 4R70W. The seller sent me some diagrams that I will include here. after the links

The wife and I had a discussion on what direction we wanted to go with the 79 this weekend. We decided to pretty much try and keep it just the way it is. It belonged to her father before he passed away so we want to just get it road worthy and reliable again but try to keep it pretty much the way it was when he drove it.

I am going to change the paint color, because faded out grey is just not for us and I had talked to him about painting it a different color before he passed away.

Think and easier electric OD swap would have been E4OD. It is self contained only needing the transmission computer, switch, and TPS. would have been an easier swap. The diagrams he sent you are the ones straight out of the Ford manual. I thought you were going mechanical OD

I was until I learned that s stock mechanical AOD will not handle more then 225 hp stock so I would need to upgrade it. The 4r70w is overall a much better trans and it can handle 500 stock and has better gear ratio.
