Making a rollpan

Well I thought I would try my hand at making a rollpan for my truck. Here's the progress I made today.

First I cut the appropriate size sheet taking into account the curve of the metal.

I used a weight that was laying around to make the curve I wanted on the pan.

I then made some perpendicular lines on the metal. These would be used for reference when bending the curve.

I didn't have any large diamter pipe around to use as a make-shift metal brake so I used some weights mounted on a barbell to form with my hands. I used a 25 lb. plate since it has a tighter curve knowing there would be spring back in the metal.

I got the shape close but needed a touch more so I made 8 total gussets that matched the outside profile of the pan. I made sure to use a single pattern to copy all others made.

I then spaced evenly and tacked in place.

Here's is a bar tacked in place so everything is solid once I cut out for the license plate mount.

And that's where I'm at as of now. Hopefully will get more accomplished tomorrow. Time to get cleaned up and head to the movies. Me and the family are going to watch 'Man of Steel'.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Great Job! Eager to see the finished product. And quite appropriate movie choice.

That's pretty funny, never even caught that! I thought the movie was pretty good. Guess it's time to put on my cape and get back out in the shop.

Here it is minus a little bit of finish welding and installation.

Mock up of it on the truck.

Great job! It matches the look it seems you're going for. That tailgate is pure darksider, I like. I see you widened the rear fenders as well, again matches the look. What other mods are you going to do to the body? Just wondering what your plans were for the front end? Love the pics

Yeah here's some in my build thread. You'll have to look through a couple pages as I skipped from one job to another.

Actually, if you look closer I didn't widen the fenders I just patched a typical rust area on these fenders (although I did think about widening them at one point ).

As far as the front, man so much work there. A lot of rust repair. I'm thinking about using the 51-52 hood. (did I mention rust repair). I've got a pretty decent one. I'm planning on having a tilt hood so I'm going to make patches and smooth the front openings. (oh yeah, some rust repair) Maybe use some mesh behind the side openings on hood and also run a single piece of stainless from the '49 hood above the openings. French the headlights. You got any ideas for me? Plans may change by the time I actually get to work on the front.
