Cool Chatter

I've noticed, since I put the engine back in my truck, a chatter that seems to be coming from under the dash. It can be pretty annoying, and I've been trying to find it, to no avail.

At one point, I thought it was the vacuum advance hitting against the throttle linkage, but that turned oout not to be the case. It only makes the noise when it's moving, and it becomes more pronounced at highway speeds, or at least as close to highway speeds as Grover is capable of doing!

One thing thqt has changed since the last time I had the enigne out (other than a reground crankshaft) are new transmission (or rear engine) mounts. I am concerned that the noise is actually coming out of the transmission, which of course would mean that the noise could be expensive.

Do any o' y'all have any ideas?

Try looking at your front U joint. When those things are warn they make noise. Just wiggle the shaft. If it's sloppy replace it.

Don

Get it rolling down the road where it makes the noise real good. Put the truck in neutral and coast. Does the noise change or go away? Nathan's idea is a distinct possibility as well. You often can't tell until you actually disassemble the joint though. I have had them fool me with the wiggle test.

Can you describe the noise a little better? Bangs, squeeks, clunks, grinding?

It may be as simple as forgetting to completely tighten mounting bolts or something else left unattached. Good luck !'

The noise sounds a lot like someone lightly pecking on the dashboard with a tack hammer. One of you suggested u-joint. While I won't rule that out (I have NO idea how old those u-joints are!) that noise sure doesn't sound like any u-joint failing I have ever heard.
