1960 T98 Capacity

I drained the fluid from the transmission, and have two questions:

1. The Shop Manual (p295, or 5-85) says:
4-Speed (Warner T -98A) - 8 pints
There's no way 8 pints will fit in this thing. Just under 30 oz came out, but I don't know if it was full/half-empty/etc

2. Which plug is the fill plug? Just above the drain plug, there's another "square" plug, but that's only half-way up the side of the casing - and it's on a vertical side, not a flat, or even slanted, top/side. Certainly I could get a funnel angled in if that's the fill hole, just asking.

But I guess the capacity is what I need to double-check as well. Thanks for any info...

...also... just went to AZone and two guys there told me to get "F" type, which, on the container says for automatics. Just FYI...

I believe that is correct, 8pints/4quarts/1gallon. That sounds like about what I put in mine. I don't remeber exactly where the fill plug is but it should be another square plug just like the drain plug about half way up. Just fill it up until it starts over flowing. I used 90w gear oil, I've heard of people using 50w claiming it made it shift better but don't quote me on that.

X2 f250 is correct. plug on side is fill hole. 90 should be good and type f is for automatic tranns. Those guys at AZone misunderstood or don,t have a clue.

So, bent a funnel and got 3 quarts in - started overflowing on the 4th. Tried to jack up the passenger side to get as much in as possible, but prob did not help too much.

However, did put the "F" type in, hopefully won't screw it up too much. Can always drain and refill, still have the floor plate off. It's only money...

The T98 definitely should not be run with automatic transmission fluid. Drain it out and fill it with 85-90 or 90-140 depending on how hot it gets where you are at. The thicker fluid is used in areas where it gets hot. Also try to find GL-4 gear oil, not GL-5. The GL-5 is made for hypoid rear axles and includes compounds that could attack your brass or bronze synchronizers and thrust washers. Where I live I have to go to NAPA to get the GL-4.

X2 on the GL rating, many people don't know that. I found some Sta-Lube GL-4 at a local parts store.

Buy your gear oil in a one gallon container that has a pump and fill it from below.

Thanks for all the feedback - as usual very helpful. Seems I did it incorrectly today, so tomorrow it looks like a NAPA trip. The gallon w/ pump sounds like a much better option of filling than what I did today :-)

Actually the easiest way is to remove the gear shift handle and pour it through the hole. But you are better off to get the pump then you can use it in the future on other trans and rear ends.

That works great if you don't have the interior in. Even if you remove the floor center section, too much risk of getting gear oil all over the place. One little drop and the truck stinks to high heaven forever.

I guess I should have included a note: NOT recommended for sloppy people.

I am a little off but I love that smell! Autozone guy should be horsewhipped for that kind of info. So many younger counter guys seem willing to help but not so willing to listen. They prolly heard you say older ford and that was all they heard. You often have to do their job for them when you go to the big stores. Do your homework first and don't expect them to know much and you wil not be dissapointed!
