Question Shift pattern not right on 02 6-speed 7.3l

Hi my first post hope its in the right spot. Im surprised you dont have a emergency help section.

Well heres my issue just bought an 02 7.3l 550 6-speed man.

1st and 2nd gear are next to impossible to use. if you imaging the HH of the shift pattern 1st and 2nd gear are practically in the same slot and 3rd and 4th. or in that VOID inbetween. any ideas why this is or what causes it?

Diagrams to explain: X's being the ares that would be "blocked by the imaginary shift patern plate.

Normal Shift Pattern:

R X 1 X 3 X OD
L X 2 X 4 X

My truck drives like this: the N being just blank voids where 1 and 2 should be in a normal transmission but act as neutral, the shifter moves up and down into these SLOTS in the shift patten but there is no gear there.

R X N X 1 3 X OD
L X N X 2 4 X

its very hard to explain but in a normal truck, if you shift from 3 to 1 you need to move the stick down, left and back up because it feels like there is a wall inbetween the gears so that you do not shift into both by accident. my 1st gear is not left and up it is left a bit, up, then RIGHT!, THROUGH THE WALL to where 3rd would be. and 2nd gear is right where 4th would be

i know this sounds very confusing. my question is: is there a guide plate or adjustment that can cause 1st and 2nd to feel out of place like this?

it is very difficult to drive ad every time u need to use 1st or 2nd you need to play with the shifter for minutes while blocking traffic to try to find the little hole in the wall to get from the 1 to 3 slot in the pattern.

usually i have to redline the truck in L and jump to 3rd just to avoid being stuck there for 2 min.

Is this common? i have searched all over and found nothing like this from other people and i have driven pleanty of superdutys in the past none like this.

thanks!

Best I can do:

https://www.zf.com/na/content/media/...650_6S-750.pdf

Other models have a top cover that comes off so you can see the shifting works in the truck. This one looks like it has to come apart to correct any issue beyone loose external bolts or shift boot issues or clutch fluid issues.
