V10 spit a valve, done with this thing

Pulling a 10K load up Cajon pass in California at 4K rpm my truck started to run a little ruff. I crested the pass and made it back home. truck is in the shop now and right now they say that the #6 cylinder valves don't hold so they wanna do a valve job, they also say something hit the plug which I looked at and it's pretty obvious something hit the electrode on the plug. I also noticed when I got back that the truck had lost over 2 quarts of oil. So I figure a piece of valve or debris bounced around in the barrel, scored it and my oil went by the rings, so even if they do a valve job I seriously doubt it will run properly. Basically I'm done with this thing. I told them to put a plug back in it and I'm gonna drive it to Carmax and be done with it.

I just put about 4 grand in this thing back in October trying to beef up my towing capacity, 4:56 gears, Livewire from Mike, air bags and a Ypipe. I'm pretty much sick about it.

I appreciate the insight I got in fixing it up, the mods did help, the gears and tuner worked great, not sure I would do the Y pipe again though.

What about finding a replacement engine? I've seen a few on craigslist while looking for a different truck.

I threw two rods through the block of my 7.3 and found a replacement engine for $1100 with fewer miles than the one that blew. I replaced a bunch of parts on the new engine while it was on the engine stand and parted out some of the old engine. In the end it cost about $1000 and a some of my time to swap the engine out.

Just a thought.

If the block is good, just get a new head. Or better yet get both heads, they really aren't that expensive.

Truck is gone, Carmax gave me 4 grand, I really believe the rings are bad for it to have lost that oil, to get new heads or a valve job minimum and then deal with a engine rebuild I figure I'd be looking at about 5 grand for a shop to do it. Blue book is about 8 grand and I allready made up my mind I'm getting a different truck any how so I figure I just saved a bunch of hassle and in the end I get paid about the same for the truck.

Damn, that sucks, sorry to hear about the bad fortune. Out of curiosity, what's the details on the truck you just parted with? Year, mileage, etc.

Just out of curiosity, what is the GVWR of your "new" Chevy. It will be on the door pillar.

WOW... Desperation sale there bro... How much did you lose? 8-10 Grand? Your ordeal cost you a LOT more than the $1500.00 a used V10 motor would have cost.

Thats really beside the point.. Hopefully you bought an 04.5, if you didn't, well... I hope you enjoy the $5k fuel Injector repair that due in about 30-60k miles

I like those trucks.. I just don't trust ANY diesel.. I hope your experience is better.

Thanks and good luck!

No selling in the forums. There is now a time limit on posting in the Marketplace, not a post count requirement. Thread edited to remove the for-sale back-and-forth.

110K miles, and sucked a valve? Sounds more like a valve spring broke.

Gotta love it! The OP was sick of spending money on his truck, so he spends 10x what a decent used motor would have cost to buy a new truck! Good luck with the new truck!

People that hate spending money on vehicle repairs should not buy a chev.

I don't think I have more than 3k into my new motor at this time. That is at 30 over and all new inside except crank. PI heads. Complete motor.
