I just bought an '88 F-250 (for $150! It needs some exhaust work and a head gasket, minimally) but it doesn't come with a door key, just an ignition key. Can I take it to the dealer and have them make new keys, or should I just get a new set of door locks?
The ignition key is different, I already checked that.

Hi Andy, and if you dont want the expense of a locksmith (no idea how much they would charge) you can visit the local auto wrecker and get a pair of locks. Hopefully they will have keys. They are fairly easy to change. And hello to Buffalo, I used to live in Niagara Falls years ago and saw quite a bit of your area...

Years ago I bought a toolbox without a key. Before I ever took it home I went to a locksmith. He hopped up in the back of my truck, looked at it, went into his shop and made a key. He only had to make adjustments a couple of times before it worked. I don't believe a locksmith will charge you much since you will be able to take the truck to him. I would at least check it out before going through the trouble of changing out locks. It will be a lot quicker and easier to let a locksmith do the work for you. I can't see the charge be over $20 if you take the truck to him.

It's pretty easy to make a key with some skill. I saw it once on tv, repossesors stealing the car back. He had a tool that cut the key, and by sliding the key into the slot, it makes a mark that you can cut from. Only took him 2-3 minutes to make the ket to steal it back.
