transfer case

I have a 2000 F-150 4X4 with auto trans & manual shift transfer case.
Bought the truck used so I have no owners manual. What is the proper procedure for shifting into/out of 4 wheel drive?
Thanks

'97-up F-150s don't have hub locks. Vacuum-operated axle center disconnect.

Probably just slow to 5mph or less, and pull the lever. Same to get into N or 4L, or back to 4H. To go from 4H to 2H, you don't have to slow down.

Thanks for the responses.
I have shifted in and out of 4 wheel drive (hi and lo) and wonder if I should be concerned about the grinding of gears when doing so? It clunks real solid when engaging.

For some reason, when shifting from 2H to 4H, these center axle disconnect trucks do clunk on the fly. It may be the lack of synchronization when the foward axles engage and the xfer case is shifted.
I'm not to worried about it as it only does it on the fly going into 4H. I'd just tend to pick when I shift, and see if I have the opportunity to stop first. It'll be a judgement call.

According to the owners manual you can shift from 2H to 4H on the fly up to 55mph down to 32 degrees F, and at 45mph below freezing. It also says that the noise you described when shifting on the fly is normal.
