Thinking About buying the new 2.0 Eco Boost
I have not heard anybody say that they have the 2.0 Eco Boost in their Explorer. There has been several people talking about there being a perceived problem with a lack of power. Is there anybody willing to share their experience with their own Explorer or with a test ride? My wife drives around town 90% and 10% freeway. Please share your knowledge. Will I be making a mistake, or will it be good thing to be saving on fuel? Jag

We bought a new 2012 Explorer back in August of this year. A friend of mine is the manager of the Ford Dealership; I questioned him about the 2.0 Eco boost and behnd closed doors he recommended waiting till they worked all the bugs out of it, he didn't elaborate on any exact problems but I didn't want to take any chances so we bought the 3.5L
This is only my opinion and his recommendation to me. Take it for what its worth and good luck in your decision.

I have a 2013 2.0 EcoBoost. While I haven't had any problems with it, I wish I would have stuck with the V6. It doesn't get anywhere near the 28 mpg on the sticker. I'd say that on the highway, it gets about 22 or 23.
Since it is a $1k option, stick with the standard engine. You won't save a grand on fuel with it so it isn't worth it.

Old thread and I'll update it in case anybody new is interested. We have a 2012 limited with the Ecoboost and now have 16k miles on it. So far so good, no problems other than the sync touch junk. It works, just when it wants to. We average 19.4mpg in the city and get up to 26 on the highway. Not much highway around us now so it's mostly city. Power level could be better but it's ok, I'm used to driving a diesel so all gasoline motors feel anemic to me. No regrets other than I wish the touch system was a regular dial setup.

Personally, IMHO I would wait until year 3 of production for either one....the Ex is a new series chassis, etc and although with regard to the drivetrain- there is nothing new here it is new to this chassis & just like the F150 EB (which has air intake/intercooler issues), there are inherient design issues that are unidentified until the public gets a few hundred thousand miles on.....by year 3, they will not only have everything fixed there will be needed enhancements as well.
