Replaced clutch packs, bad bearing found.
I replaced the clutch packs in my 2004 F150 with the 9.75" axle this weekend because I was getting a bad shudder when I turned sharply. During the process, I ran into a bad carrier bearing on one side. Apparently some metal shavings from the old clutches must have come off and got in the bearing. It's a good thing I found it because it probably would have failed soon.
I just wanted to update anyone that is going to replace their clutch packs that you should check the bearings while you're in there. Also, when re-installing the spider gears you may want to fashion a homemade spreader to press out the side gears. I took a bolt and threaded on two nuts, then welded the nuts together. I then put the bolt between the side gears and backed out the nuts to create space for the smaller spider gears. I also went with the smallest shim in the clutch pack to help on space, a mechanic at the ford dealership recommended this. Hopefully this helps anyone attempting this project.
