oil filter size

Okay this may sound like a dumb question, but I have to satisfy my curiosity. Why does a four cylinder ranger have a bigger oil fiter than a v8 powered full size f150? I have owned two four cylinder rangers with the 2.3 liter four and have noticed they use the big FL1-A filter. My current truck a 97 f150 with a 4.6 v8 uses a shorter filter. Shouldn't the larger engine have a larger filter?

I believe that the size doesnt really matter, It has to do with how much room there is around the oil filter.

Okay I figured it was something like that. I guess this is one of those rare moments when bigger is not better.
