390 EGR

I have a question which I am sure others have had much experience with; the factory EGR system. I am not a tree hugger, or one that even cares to over pollute...I am looking for I suppose better engine operation/replace loss of power from the EGR valve removal.

I know there is a plate between the carburetor and the intake, can that be tapped and effectively plugged once the EGR valve is removed?

OR

Do I have to remove that plate and find a say, phenolic plate so the EGR passages within the intake manifold are completely blocked off?

I am looking at the timing chain replacement project next.

Thanks~

Removing the EGR will require you to rejet the carburetor and recurve the distributor.

devino246 is right. If you do not jet you will be running very lean, you can read this as high cylinder temperatures, very hard on valves and piston rings. Engine will want to run-on after you turn off the key.
The dist would need to be recurved to match a 60's era unit. this will keep the engine from pinging in mid range and help fuel economy.
Most of the time it is easier to repair the vacuum lines and replace the EGR.

Thanks guy's. I will keep it on then...not worth the efforts other than making sure everything is hooked up correctly and the hoses are all new as are the control valves.
