GVWR Classes and Cost?

GVWR Classes and Cost?
My dad and I both received our "Annual Dues" for our truck's GVWR this weekend. We noticed the costs were different even though we both have 1/2-ton trucks. He has an '02 F-150 XLT and me a '12 F-150 FX4. The '02 cost $50 something and the '12 $70 something. We always thought if the trucks were 1/2-ton's the prices would match, because both would be CLASS 1 but I guess this isn't the case? I also have a '78 F-250 which I know should be more and is being it is in CLASS 2. Maybe this was just a rule of thumb and bad assumption that they should be the same price?
Here's a chart I found:

Va is pulling the same crap. My old '88 weighed 3800 lbs with a 1425 lb payload while my '11 weighs about 5600 with a 1600 lb payload, 7200 lb package.
What's really going to screw us is if the states start using our GCVWR. The new trucks can pull so much more than the older models.

Does this mean our newer trucks are in CLASS 2 being they are rated above 5000? Never would have gave this a thought beforehand.

My '78 250 is rated somewhere between 7800-8600 gvwr, big difference if you ask me, that thing will haul way more than my new truck with out a squat so I can understand the cost difference there.

In PA you can register a truck for any weight class you want, as long as it isn't too low for your empty weight. You can't register a 6k lb truck as class 1. The registration is for max combined gross vehicle weight. Also, "farm trucks" are charged less for their registration.
Check the registration cards to see what weight they are registered for.
