I have a 1978 Ford F250, 2 wheel drive, with a 351M. I'm looking to restore this truck...someday...hopefully sooner rather than later, however it has developed a mechanical problem I am not familiar with...
After sitting for and extended period of time, like overnight, the engine will turnover but not start, if I shoot gas in the carb it fires right up and runs...if I baby the accelation it appears to run ok, but if I put into a little it cuts out, almost dies but doesn't then recovers and runs.
I have replace the fuel pump, cleaned distributor points, wires are good..I don't know, its like its not getting the gas to start but will run fine...
Well i had the same problem when i replaced my carb, i got sum crud in the hard line from the pump to the carb that was restricting flow, if you check that and there's no crud do a pressure test on the new fule pump to see its getting enough gas to the mill. hope you get it figured out
It sounds like the accelerator pump on your carb is not working.
With the engine OFF, look into the throat of the carb (with choke
plate open), and you should see a stream of gas when you open the throttle all the way up.. There is a tendency for the "push
rod" to corrode, where it goes into the accelerator pump
housing....
